  1. 4-5 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed
  2. 1/2 cup brown sugar
  3. 1/4 cup melted butter
  4. 1/4 cup milk
  5. 2 eggs, beaten
  6. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  7. 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  8. 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  9. 1/4 teaspoon salt

For the topping:

  1. 1/2 cup brown sugar
  2. 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  3. 1/4 cup melted butter
  4. 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).


  • Place the sweet potato cubes in a large pot and cover them with water. Bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium and let the potatoes simmer until they are tender, about 15-20 minutes. Drain the potatoes and transfer them to a large mixing bowl.

  • Mash the sweet potatoes using a potato masher or fork until they are smooth and creamy.


  • To the mashed sweet potatoes, add the brown sugar, melted butter, milk, beaten eggs, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Stir until all ingredients are well combined.

  • Transfer the sweet potato mixture to a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
  • In a separate bowl, prepare the topping by mixing together the brown sugar, flour, melted butter, and chopped nuts (if using) until crumbly. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the sweet potato mixture in the baking dish.
  • Bake the sweet potato casserole in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the casserole is heated through.
  • Once baked, remove the casserole from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving.
